Best First Dance Songs

The first dance you share as husband and wife is likely to be one of the most enduring and special memories from your wedding day. Although the technical intent is fairly mundane, to open the dance floor for your guests, it has become a romantic and special moment shared by the couple and offers a moment to reconnect during the craziness of your special day. However, unless you have a clear “our song” that has always been yours, the choice can be overwhelming - how can you choose a soundtrack for your whole relationship? It’s a big job and can be a bone of contention between any couple. But whether you choose a funky choreographed number or a slow and traditional Waltz, this list of songs has you covered.

Slow and Steady

Bring romance to the dance floor with these slow but definitely not cringe-worthy love songs:

Let's Stay Together, Al Green - Could this be one of the greatest songs ever? It's alleged that Al Green wrote it in just 5 minutes but it has definitely stood the test of time.  With its romanitc melody and lyrics about unconditional love and staying together through good times and bad, this is the perfect first dance song choice.

Groovy Kind of Love, Phil Collins – slow, but not too slow, romantic but not mushy, this classic song ticks all the right boxes.

At Last, Etta James – a true soulful classic, there won’t be a dry eye in the house after you and your beloved share a dance to this song.

The Way you Look Tonight, Frank Sinatra – perfect for a choreographed number, this swinging tune will have your guests up and dancing as soon as they can.

Unchained Melody, The Righteous Brothers – it broke hearts everywhere when a ghostly Patrick Swayze visited Demi Moore and is a lovers’ classic for a reason.

Fast and Furious

Try to keep up with these upbeat tunes to really get the party started:

Everything, Michael Buble – upbeat and happy, it’s perfect for those of you who want to stay away from the sappy love songs but still remind the world you’re in love.

Accidentally In Love, Counting Crows – a mix of slow and fast tempos, this is a great choice if the bride and groom can’t decide how fast to take it. Probably not for the less experienced dancers though!

Better Together, Jack Johnson – this has a great beat for a slightly faster dance, but is still slow enough to share a tender moment together. The lyrics are beautiful too.

Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Queen – celebrate the crazy, strange and unbelievable feeling of love and everything it entails. Love really does make you do crazy things!

Marry Me, Bruno Mars - the title says it all!  Give some meaning to the song by doubling-up and using it for your proposal too.  This amazing real proposal may give you some inspiration.

Remember, there are no rules and whichever song you choose will be perfect because it means something to you.

We'd love to hear your suggestions too, and if you recently got married what was your first dance song?
