Filming Your Destination Wedding

In case some of your friends and family aren’t able to witness your wedding celebration in person, consider hiring a professional videographer so you can bring your wedding to them. You won’t regret having your special day on video for yourself and future generations to see.

The simplest option would be to hire a professional photographer based near to your wedding destination.  Your wedding planner (if you’re using one) or venue will be able to offer some suggestions.

If your budget allows, you could take a videographer with you.  You may need to check with your destination country to confirm they allow out-of-country videographers to work without a permit. If a permit is required, you may need to file for one well in advance. In addition, verify with your venue that you can bring in your own videographer. They may require you to use their on-staff videographer or charge an additional fee to use your own.

Luckily, choosing a videographer is a simple endeavor due to the numerous online videos you can preview before making your final decision.  Once you find a videographer whose style matches your vision, set up a meeting to see if your personalities match. You want to make sure they have a cool temperament and will get along with your guests.

If you can’t meet them in person before you travel, at least have a chat with them over Skype to make sure they’re clear about what you’re expecting, what’s included in the price, and that your personalities don’t clash.

It’s wise to write a simple contract expressing exactly what your intention is for the final video, including how long you want it to be, if it will be of your wedding ceremony only or your wedding and other events, your preferred background music choices, etc. Be clear about your wishes while leaving the majority of creative decisions to them (they are the professionals).

If having a quality video of your wedding isn’t in your budget or isn’t a priority, you could consider recruiting a budding filmmaker from amongst your friends to become your honorary videographer for the day. Give them some guidelines to work with and you may be surprised by what they produce. This method also means you will have to find someone to edit the finished product. You could try enrolling the help of friends familiar with basic editing programs, like iMovie, or search online for film students looking to add to their reel for a low cost.
