lgbt destination wedding

Gay marriage may finally be legal in all 50 states, but let’s be honest, some of those states stepped willingly into the 21st century and some were dragged in kicking and screaming. LGBT couples will be made more comfortable in some corners of the US than others, so here are the top four American wedding destinations to enjoy your special day.

Iowa

It may surprise you, but Iowa is one of the few states in the country that didn’t ban gay marriage in the wake of DOMA in the ‘90s. In fact, the nation’s capital of corn legalized gay marriage long before the majority of its neighbors, in 2009. Support may be a narrow majority, but a majority it is, so if you and your fiancé are looking for that homegrown, Midwestern feel, bring the family together in America’s heartland. Des Moines has a bevy of classy, affordable hotel venues, or you can take on a rockabilly theme at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, where Buddy Holly gave his last performance.

Massachusetts

New England has always been a friendly region to LGBT couples, but Massachusetts stands a little above its neighbors for being the first to formally legalize same-sex marriages. Celebrate your nuptials in this trailblazing state with a beach wedding in Cape Cod. Provincetown is a three-time travel awards winner for "Best Domestic Gay Resort Town.” A round of golf or a whale watching cruise make wonderful wedding weekend activities to bring your guests together.

New Mexico

When it comes to marriage equality in the Southwest, New Mexico leads the pack with its mind-boggling number of LGBT-friendly wedding vendors. Much of this desert state is filled with vibrant culture, but for an extra-special twist to the ceremony, use a hot air balloon as your getaway car in the balloon capital of the country, Albuquerque. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta fills the skies with colorful giants every October.

Virginia

Dreaming of California wine country but want to avoid the Napa crowds? Take a chance on a burgeoning wine region like Virginia. While rural areas of the state may still be lukewarm on the whole Supreme Court legislation thing, northern Virginia and the area around Charlottesville, where most of the state’s hidden gem vineyards are located, are decidedly more liberal. Wineries like Barboursville, Breaux, and Pippin Hill can get you fabulous wines and fairy tale-worthy views just as easily as bigger names on the West Coast.
